Mufasa is our little clown and we adore him ! He was born in 1995 here in California. He is a Smoothcoated Chihuahua. We had done our research at the local library before going out to buy a puppy. Most of the books were old and out of date. This was right before the Taco Bell ads made the Chihuahua so popular again. The internet had hardly anything (not like now!) SO the books did warn us not to buy from a pet store, but they didn't tell us how to pick a good breeder. We got the "idea" that if we wanted a pet, we should stay away from anyone who "Showed" their dogs. Some of the books even suggested that you really needed to get your Chihuahua at 6 weeks old (YIKES I sure know better now, Chihuahuas should stay with Mom for 10 -16 weeks) We now think since we got him at 6 weeks, that is why he has NO IDEA that he is a DOG!!! Ok so moving on... the "breeder" we found was a very sweet older couple. The house was clean as was the area where the dogs were kept. All the dogs seems happy and friendly. They had answers to most of our questions. What should have been a red flag... she wasn't sure which doggie was the father of the puppies. Well from what I have learned since, Mufasa's health problems are genetic and could have been avoided by a more experienced breeder. Now don't get me wrong, I would not trade my baby for 100 million dollars ! He is a blessing in our lives. I just hope other may learn from our mistakes. Your best bet is to research first and be prepared to ask LOTS of questions. Here is a link to a wonderful site that will give you a good idea of what to ask and what to do when looking for a reputable breeder : http://www.inch.com/~dogs/breeders.html BUT WAIT there is another option! There are so many GREAT Chihuahuas waiting for forever homes, adopt a rescue!! Our other two dogs are both from different rescue groups and we could not have found more fun and wonderful dogs if we tried! To see Mufasa's Photo Gallery please click the Slideshow button.
